Why I became a Graphic Designer

If you would’ve told me 5 years ago, “Hey Brianne, did you know one day you will start your own Graphic Design & Photography business and work from home full time?” I would’ve thought you were absolutely insane. Me? A Graphic Designer? And I run my own business?! You’ve got the wrong girl! The truth is, I never set out to be a designer. Growing up I had always dreamed of becoming a Veterinarian or a Zoologist (yes, you read that right). It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I realized I had a passion for design & photography that I didn’t even know existed.  I started out by taking a high school photography class and immediately fell in love with photography. I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I hardly knew a thing about it, but I knew I wanted to make my dream a reality and be a photographer. The further I dove into it, the more I fell in love with it. I began pursuing concept photography and telling stories through my images. I also did a number of art shows with my photography and won best in show!

It wasn’t until my Sophomore year of college when I moved to Texas, that my pursuit of design began. When I moved to Texas, the college I was enrolled in did not offer photography classes…great… so what was I going to do now?? That’s when I began my studies in Visual Communications and Design. I quickly rose to the top of my class and participated in a number of Design & Art shows outside of college. I even entered the AIGA Portfolio review for Juniors and Seniors when I was only a Sophomore! I quickly realized I loved everything about design. I loved the way you could combine art with conveying a message to your audience. You see, design isn’t just about art or a pretty logo, design is much more than that. Design is about being able to tell a story or convey a message through a logo or brand. I always found that fascinating. I loved being able to combine different fonts or symbols and use them to communicate a bigger picture.

What I realized about design was that it allowed me to be myself, truly and fully. It let me express who I was as an artist, as well as working one on one with clients and helping people make their dream business a reality. The truth is design is my biggest passion and it consumes my life on a day to day basis. When I’m not surfing the internet for work or Facebooking, I’m looking up new tutorials and techniques for design, pinning logos on Pinterest, and even looking at other design work on Instagram. I’m constantly involved in design and I love everything about it. I honestly can’t imagine my life without it!
